Alan Lasser’s Game of the Week        July 12, 2009

Seventeen year old Jake LaPlant tore through a strong field of young lions, an ex-expert, and the legendary "Milford Morphy" to win the first Orange Chess Club Championship with a perfect 4-0 score.  I was second at 3-1 followed by a fierce group at 2-2, including Nathan Gotman, Likhit Ganedi, Jonathon Gleason, Scot Cameron, and tournament director Ryan Young.  The 1-3 scores were Alex Gleason, Ratan Manohar and Praneeth Ganedi.  Avery Chen surprised us all by arriving too late to join in.  The tournament's crucial game was a hard fought struggle in round two, when Jake pressured my weakened kingside until I dropped a pawn.  In the time scramble that occurred after my scoresheet ended, he stared the five second time delay in the face and won my rook.
