Derek Meredith of West Hartford is the new ChessFest champion, having won the top section of the ChessFest II tournament held July 28 2007 in downtown New London. Meredith, a national chess expert, won all four of his games. His first three were at the time control of 30 minutes per player. In the finals he defeated national expert Pawel Dobrzanski of Norwich. Dobrzanski won his first two games against Class A players, and his third win was against another national expert, Yogesh Ragunathan of West Hartford. Adam Melch of North Stonington, a chess teacher at Mystic Noank Library, tied for the second place prize money of $ 105 each, with Dobrzanski and Ragunathan. His classes are every Saturday at 9am email ADAMJM@snet.net Finishing with two wins and a draw were Alan Lasser, a chess teacher from West Haven, Aweer Karsou of Groton, ChessFest I champion, and John Terrall of Gales Ferry. The 18 players in 0pen Section averaged 1857, making this a Class A event. Michael A. Smith of Providence RI and Kwang Tan of Waterford finished in a 3-way tie for the 10-man Amateur Section with Robert Kozlowski, director of the New Britain Chess Club. 16 players were in the Junior Section. Robert Young of Woodbridge won all four of his games. Ryan Roussel of Shelton, Patrick Hulin of New Haven, Nick Meredith of West Hartford, and Eric McGirr of the Flanders School Chess Club tied for second place. The tournament was the highlight of festivities held outdoors but under tents at the park across from the downtown train station in New London.
